Abstract

This research discusses the representation of racism in Mosley's novel Devil in a Blue Dress. The novel serves as a social document that reflects the life experiences and the historical context of racial tensions in America. The researcher used the theory of sociology of literature by Alan Swingewood (1972). The objective of this research is to investigate the forms of racism experienced by African-American characters in 1948 Los Angeles. The data obtained is then investigated in more depth through several stages. First, the researcher read the novel Devil in a Blue Dress. Second, the researcher analyzed the novel using the theory put forward by Alan Swingewood (1972). Third, the researcher classified the novel data according to several types of racism, such as systemic, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized racism. Essentially, because of the objective of this research is to provide a depth qualitative analysis, the research employed a descriptive and qualitative method. The findings revealed that from the 14 data found in the novel, 6 findings are classified as interpersonal racism, 5 findings are categorized as institutional racism, 5 findings are classified as internalized racism, and 5 findings are classified as systemic racism. So, interpersonal racism is considered as the most data from the novel. Also, one of the significances impacts that affects every aspect of life is limitation of opportunities, hurting people both physically and mental, as well as the internalization of negative stereotypes. As a result, this research providing the new insights into the representation of racism in the novel Devil in a Blue Dress and its impact on African-American characters.
