Abstract

This study is entitled “The effectiveness of Crossword Puzzle in Teaching Vocabulary.” This study aimed to discover whether ot not crossword puzzle effective in order to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. It aimed to investigate the students’ responses toward the effectiveness of crossword puzzle used for teaching vocabulary. The study used the experimental design. The participants of the study were two classes of seventh grade of Kemah junior high school, Bandung VII A and VII B those are experimental’s group and control’s group. The data gained through a pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires. The data from pre-test and post-test were then analyzed by using SPSS 20 for Windows. The data from questionnaires were analyzed using a Likert’s Scale. The computation results of independent t-test on post-test show that tobt (2.181) is higher than tcrit (2.00856). The results of dependent t-test presents that the significance 2 tailed was 0.000. It is lower than 0.05. Therefore the null hypothesis was rejected. It indicated that there was difference between pre-test and post-test score after treatments. Furthermore, the results of questionnaires showed that most of the students (83.4%) gave positive responses toward the effectiveness of crossword puzzle in teaching vocabulary. The students were enjoyable during the teaching and learning process through crossword puzzle. They more motivated and attractive in the class. Therefore, crossword puzzle is not only improving their students’ vocabulary mastering, but also make a fun and attractive class atmospheres.
