Abstract

This research describes about territorial dispute over the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands between South Korea and Japan. The two countries claimed the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands as part of their respective territories based on historical, geographical and international law. It is always been a very sensitive issue in the bilateral relations of the two countries which affected their economic relations. The purpose of this study is to find out the motivations of South Korea and Japan in the dispute of the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands, explain the economic relations of the two countries and explain the impact of the dispute of the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands on their economic relations. Descriptive method is applied in this writing, with data collection techniques in the form of library research. The data were collected and analyzed to find the linkage between the dispute over the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands and South Korea-Japan’s economic relations. Through the analysis, this research found there are several direct and indirect impact of the Dokdo/Takeshima Islands dispute on South Korea's and Japan's economic relations. As for the direct impact, there are the termination of foreign exchange agreements between the two countries, and the significant decrease number of tourist from South Korea to Japan. The indirect impacts are spotted on the fluctuate of export, import, flow and stock investments, and foreign currency exchange rates between the two countries right after the dispute heated up.
