Abstract

Character is an important element in fictional work besides the other elements. In fiction, character reveals a textual representation of human being, or occasionally another creature. Character is the player in the story and it makes the story alive. Every character in a story has characterization. Characterization is the process of conveying information about characters in fiction. In other words, characterization is the way an author describes their characters’ characteristic in the story. The writer chose “An Analysis of Protagonist and Antagonist Characters in Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” as the title of his research. This research has two purposes: to find out how the characterizations of the characters are generally described in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows novel, and to find out how the protagonist and antagonist characterizations are described in the novel. The writer limits the research into analyzing only five main characters that found in the story that the writer found after reading throughout the novel. This research is expected to provide knowledge in analyzing the character and its characterization and, especially, about protagonist and antagonist characterization of a fictional work. The characterizations of the characters in the novel are described in both showing and telling method. With those methods, the description of characterization is collected either through the dialogues and the narration in the novel. The writer found that each of five characters has various characteristics. In other words, there is no character that completely has either protagonist or antagonist characteristics. A character in a novel can be having complex characteristics or personalities for some purposes, and yet the complexity becomes an obstacle in categorizing a character into protagonist or antagonist. As for the conclusion of the analysis, the main characters in the novel are categorized into protago protagonist and antagonist characters based on the characters’ dominant characteristics, in terms of good/admired and bad/evil personalities. The result of categorizing the characters is that Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ronald Weasley, and Albus Dumbledore are the protagonist characters since they have heroic personalities and become the ones who are affected by the conflict of the story. In the other side, Lord Voldemort is considered as antagonist character as he has bad/evil characteristics, and is the one who create the conflict to affect the protagonist characters. Keywords: novel, fiction, character, characterization, protagonist, antagonist
