Abstract
This study is titled “The Phenomenon of Using Second Instagram Accounts as a Medium for Self-Disclosure Among Students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Pasundan University (A Phenomenological Study of the Use of Second Accounts as a Medium for Self-Disclosure Among Students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Pasundan University).” This study aims to determine the motives of students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Pasundan University, for using second Instagram accounts, to understand how students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Pasundan University, behave after creating or possessing second Instagram accounts, and to explore the significance of second Instagram accounts for students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Pasundan University. The research method used is qualitative research. The theory used in this study is the phenomenological theory by Alfred Schutz. The data collection techniques used in this study are observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the use of second Instagram accounts serves various purposes, such as fulfilling the need for privacy and a safe space. Most informants felt that their main account was too open and vulnerable to public judgement, so they created a second account as a more free and supportive private space. Furthermore, the actions of students after having a second Instagram account showed a change in behaviour patterns. Students used the second account to share more personal content as a response to their experiences on the first account, which was perceived as socially pressured, and students interpreted the second account as a ‘second home.’ The second account became a means to show their true selves. The researcher also suggests that users should be more prudent in utilising this digital space. It is hoped that students can utilise their second accounts wisely, not only as a space for free self-expression but also as a means of positive self- development. Students need to maintain communication ethics, consider privacy boundaries, and understand the potential risks that may arise from excessive openness in digital spaces, even in environments considered safe.
