Abstract

This study, entitled “An Analysis of Figurative Language in Ivan Ave's Album 'Helping Hands',” aims to explore the diverse use of figurative language and its impact on the thematic development of the album. The research applies Kennedy's theory of figurative language and Leech's seven types of meaning to examine the lyrics, focusing on how these elements contribute to the overall narrative and emotional depth. The qualitative analysis reveals that Ivan Ave employs metaphors, similes, personifications, hyperboles, synecdoches, and other figurative devices to convey complex emotions, personal reflections, and social commentary. Each figurative expression is dissected to understand its most relevant type of meaning, such as connotative, affective, and conceptual, and to provide insight into the contextual significance within the album. The findings indicate that figurative language in "Helping Hands" enhances the lyrical content by adding layers of meaning and emotional resonance. Metaphors and similes create vivid imagery and comparisons, personifications bring abstract concepts to life, and hyperboles emphasize the intensity of experiences. These elements work together to reinforce themes of personal growth, resilience, and authenticity, offering a richer and more nuanced appreciation of Ivan Ave's lyrical craftsmanship. This research contributes to the broader understanding of lyrical analysis in contemporary music, highlighting the importance of figurative language as a tool for artistic expression and audience engagement. Future studies could expand on these findings by comparing Ivan Ave’s lyrical techniques with those of other artists or exploring how different audiences interpret these figurative elements.
