Abstract

This Paper tittled “The Patriarchy System in Children Literature” (A Study of Hans Christian Andersen’s Literary Works. The study focused on children literature written on a book tittled Andersen’s Fairy Tales published by Wordsworth Classic. The writer found that Andersen inserted gender issue in form of Patriarchy systems in some of his fairy tales. These fairy tales are still famous today. The writer uses feminist approach in this study. The method used in this paper is qualitative method since the data are words and the analysis is described. The fairy tales analyzed by close reading technique. From the analysis the writer concludes that there are some Patriarchy systems in form of domination or control toward women. There are control of woman sexuality, education, movement, father absolute control toward family member and patriarcal production mode. All of these controls mostly disadvantage women. There were also some paradigm emphasized to men, for if they are not following the paradigm, the patriarcal society will humiliate them. Therefore, the writer concludes that Andersen fairy tales are need to be reviewed. Children should be guided by parents, adult or teachers on their reading process and parents, adult or teachers must know how are the criteria of good children literature.
