Abstract
This research is titled "A Comparison of Intrinsic Elements in the Storyline of the One Piece Anime and the Manga," which aims to analyze and compare the presentation of intrinsic elements, particularly characterization and plot, in the anime and manga versions of One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. The focus of this study is on the Alabasta arc, which presents a storyline that can be interpreted differently depending on the medium. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Nurgiyantoro's theory of intrinsic elements as the analytical approach to examine how the same story is adapted in visual (anime) and print (manga) formats. Data is collected from manga chapters (158, 159, and 163) and anime episodes (94, 95, 101, and 103), and then analyzed to identify narrative variations and their impact on character representation. The findings show that the manga version tends to present the story more concisely and directly, focusing on the core plot, while the anime adds scenes and visual expressions that enrich the emotional delivery. This difference significantly impacts the characterization of characters like Luffy, Vivi, and Ace, influencing how the audience understands their motivations and development. The conclusion of this research is that while both versions retain the essence of the story, the anime offers a more dynamic and emotional experience, while the manga provides a more concise and focused narrative. These findings highlight the importance of the medium in shaping storytelling and deepen our understanding of adaptation in literary studies. Keywords: Intrinsic elements, plot, characterization, One Piece, manga, anime, Alabasta arc
