Abstract

This paper is the result of a qualitative descriptive method research. This study aims to analyze the development of the main character, Chihiro in Spirited Away (2001) by Hayao Miyazaki. This movie is about a girl who is trapped in the spirit world and has a thrilling adventure to save her parents from Yubaba, an evil and cunning witch. Chihiro has a development in character. The identified data are analyzed according to the intrinsic approach and the writer describs the plots of the movie. Start from the exposition, inciting moment, rising action, conflict, complication, climax, falling action until the denouement. Data about the journey and changes in the character or development of the main character using the theories of Rene Wellek and Austin Warren's (1976) Theory of Literature to find out the factors that influence character development in the movie. This study shows about the characterization of the main character and the character. The development of the main character in the film is influenced by situations, human thoughts, and words. This research shows the meaningful characterization and development of the main character in Spirited Away (2001) movie by Hayao Miyazaki.
