Abstract
This research is entitled "The Phenomenon of Phubbing (Phone-Snubbing) Among Students in Bandung City". This is based on the attitude of students in using smartphones excessively and inappropriately so that it can have an impact as a result of its existence, one of which is phubbing behavior as a phenomenon that is very visible in today's modern era which seems to have become normative in communicating. Apart from the various features in smartphones that are fun and addictive, phubbing is also increasingly becoming a reason for students to intentionally withdraw from social circles. The purpose of this research is to find out the description of the Phubbing (Phone-Snubbing) Phenomenon in Bandung City Students, to find out and analyze the motives, actions and meanings of students in the phubbing phenomenon. This study involved 9 students from several universities in the city of Bandung aged 18- 24 years as core informants, and involved 1 expert informant and 1 academic informant. The theory used in this research is the phenomenological theory by Alfred Schutz. The research method used is a qualitative method with a descriptive study, namely how to collect various facts in the form of words and pictures supported by a natural paradigm. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of in-depth interviews, observations, literature studies and documentation. The data analysis technique is carried out in several stages, namely the process of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the motives of Bandung city students doing phubbing in social activities are because of a sense of awkwardness, not being interested in the topic of discussion, imitating actions from communication partners, boredom on topics and personal needs with certain motives. While the actions taken after phubbing are repeating phubbing actions, controlling themselves, carrying out joint conventions (agreements, keeping the smartphone out of reach and efforts to reduce phubbing but are unable. Bandung city students as perpetrators (phubber) activities phubbing they do as a way of obtaining comfort, unfavorable attitudes that are considered reasonable and to increase self-esteem, while recipients of behavior (phubbee) interpret phubbing they receive as an act that interferes with communication and lowers the mood Research suggestions are expected to increase student social awareness, control themselves in using smartphones wisely so as not to forget the importance of interpersonal communication and maintaining harmonious relations.
