Abstract

This research analyzes the physical characterization of Si Cepot in Wayang Golek Giri Harja 3 Putra Performance. Si Cepot is one of the most iconic characters in Sundanese traditional puppet theatre, recognized for his distinctive visual appearance and rich cultural symbolism. This study aims to describe how Si Cepot's physical characteristics are represented and to interpret the symbolic meanings embedded in those visual elements. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation, documentation, and literature study of three recorded Performance by Wayang Golek Giri Harja 3 Putra. Richard Schechner's Performance Theory was applied as the primary theoretical framework to examine physical characterization within the context of Performances, while Geoffrey Leech's Semantic Theory was used to analyze the conceptual, connotative, social, and affective meanings conveyed through Si Cepot's physical features. The findings indicate that Si Cepot's characterization is consistently constructed through distinctive visual elements, including facial features, body proportion, posture, costume, ornamentation, and color, all of which function as symbolic signs within the Sundanese wayang golek tradition. These physical characteristics represent cultural identity, social values, and artistic conventions that have been preserved across Performances, enabling audiences to recognize Si Cepot as a unique traditional character. The study concludes that physical characterization in traditional Performance is established through visual representation and symbolic meaning rather than through dialogue or behavioral aspects alone. Therefore, this research contributes to the fields of literary studies, Performances studies, and cultural preservation by demonstrating that visual elements play a significant role in constructing character identity in Sundanese traditional performing arts. Keywords: Characterization, Si Cepot, Wayang Golek, Performance Theory, Symbolic Meaning, Sundanese Culture.
