Abstract
This study, entitled Analysis of Fear of Negative Evaluation in Interpersonal Communication (A Phenomenological Fear of Negative Evaluation in Interpersonal Communication Study of Communication Science Students at Universitas Pasundan Class of 2022), focuses on students’ subjective experiences and meanings in academic and social contexts, examining motives, actions, and meanings of FNE in interpersonal communication. The study applies the phenomenological theory of Alfred Schutz, emphasizing because motives and in- order-to motives, using a qualitative phenomenological approach through in-depth interviews and observations. The findings indicate that students’ communication motives are largely rooted in negative social evaluation experiences such as criticism and rejection, as well as influenced by social constructions and group expectations. Communication actions tend to be defensive, including remaining silent, delaying responses, carefully constructing statements, and conforming to others’ opinions to avoid negative judgment. FNE is interpreted both as a limitation and an adaptive process in self-regulation. The discussion shows that FNE is not only emotional but also strategic in maintaining self-image and social acceptance, although it limits communication participation. In conclusion, FNE significantly shapes interpersonal communication patterns through reflective and strategic motives, defensive actions, and dual meanings that influence a self-concept dependent on external validation.
