Abstract
“Solitude as a Narrative Mechanism in Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’” examines solitude not just as a feeling or theme, but as a tool that moves the story forward. Literary narratives use structural patterns to shape how stories unfold and how characters grow. In Paulo Coelho’s (1993) “The Alchemist,” solitude shows up often at key points in the main character’s journey. The research explores two main questions: How does Todorov’s narrative cycle appear in “The Alchemist,” and how does this structure show the motif of solitude? The study describes the novel’s structure using Tzvetan Todorov’s (1971) Narrative Theory and examines how solitude works as a narrative mechanism throughout the story. The research uses a qualitative descriptive approach and a structural narrative method. Data come from close reading of “The Alchemist” (Coelho, 1993), selecting important events, sorting them into Todorov’s (1971) five narrative stages, and analyzing the results. The findings show that the novel follows Todorov’s cycle: equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium. Solitude appears at important turning points in these stages, helping the main character reflect, make decisions, and change, while also keeping the story moving and connected. The study finds that solitude is not just a recurring theme, but a key narrative tool Coelho uses to shape the story and the main character’s growth. This research contributes to structural literary studies by showing that solitude can be understood as a structural element in storytelling, not merely a theme or psychological aspect. Keywords: Narrative Mechanism, Narrative Structure, Solitude, Todorov’s Narrative Theory, The Alchemist
