Abstract
This study examines the relationship between narrative time and psychological transformation in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol (1843), focusing on its protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge. Titled “The Mechanics of Time and Trauma Recovery: A Narratological Study of the Anniversary Effect in ‘A Christmas Carol’” this study aims to analyze how the narrative sequence serves as a healing process for Scrooge. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a close-reading approach. Data analysis includes textual elements, such as dialogue, narrative passages, and events in the novel. The theories employed include Gérard Genette’s narratological theory to examine the construction of narrative time, and Mardi J. Horowitz’s Anniversary Effect theory to examine Scrooge’s psychological transformation. The research findings show that anachronisms through analepsis and prolepsis connect three dimensions of time: Scrooge’s past, present, and future—with Christmas Eve as the point where these times converge. The narrative structure, through the three Christmas spirits, compels Scrooge to confront his repressed memories, understand his emotional isolation, and change his perspective on others. Furthermore, Christmas Eve reflects the Anniversary Effect by reactivating Scrooge’s unresolved memories and triggering a gradual process of psychological change. Therefore, the narrative time in “A Christmas Carol” functions not only as a storytelling technique but also as a mechanism for character transformation. Keywords: anachronism, A Christmas Carol, anniversary effect, literature, trauma recovery
