Abstract
This study, titled "Narrative Construction of Empathy and Childhood Vulnerability in Clara Ng’s Bagai Bumi Berhenti Berputar", examined how empathy and childhood vulnerability are constructed through narrative techniques and evaluated the implications of this construction for the book’s 7+ age designation. Using a qualitative descriptive method and close reading, the study based its analysis primarily on Genette’s narratology as the analytical framework, with support from Hoffman’s theory of empathic development and Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. The data consisted of textual excerpts from the five short stories in Bagai Bumi Berhenti Berputar (2012). The findings showed that the book constructed empathy through linear chronology, internal focalization, emotional pacing, and narration centered on the child, while presenting childhood vulnerability by depicting children as having limited understanding and relying on adult guidance when confronting emotionally complex situations. Although the narratives were generally suitable for readers aged 7+, several stories employed abstract concepts and adult mediation, suggesting that the collection was more appropriate for readers at the upper end of IKAPI’s B2–B3 level. Therefore, the study concludes that the book’s 7+ age designation is generally appropriate. At the same time, the accompanying Bimbingan Orang Tua (BO) label appropriately acknowledges the need for adult mediation to support younger readers’ emotional and conceptual understanding. Keywords: age appropriateness, childhood vulnerability, children's literature, Clara Ng, empathy, narratology
