Abstract
This research is entitled “The Representation of Grief and the Meaning of Life in the Film A Man Called Otto.” The film tells the story of an elderly man named Otto who lives in deep sorrow after losing his wife. Otto is portrayed as a rigid and reserved individual who perceives his life as having lost its meaning. However, the arrival of new neighbors and various social events around him gradually change his perspective on life. The film presents the dynamics of grief not only as a personal experience but also as something closely related to social relationships and interpersonal interactions. The purpose of this research is to examine how the representation of grief and the meaning of life are constructed in the film through signifiers, signified meanings, and the construction of social reality portrayed within it. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a semiotic analysis approach based on Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory to identify signifiers and signified meanings in the film’s scenes. Additionally, Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s Social Construction of Reality theory is applied to analyze the process of social externalization reflected in the film’s narrative. The data were obtained from several scenes representing grief and the transformation of the meaning of life. The results of the study indicate that grief in the film is represented as a profound emotional experience resulting from loss, which initially leads to isolation and a desire to end one’s life. However, through social interaction and involvement in community life, the meaning of life can be reconstructed. The film constructs a social reality in which the meaning of life is not static, but can be rediscovered through relationships, empathy, and openness toward others.
