Abstract

The title of this thesis is "An Analysis of Idiomatic Expression in Bon Jovi's Crush Album." The purpose of this research is to identify the types of idioms and their meanings found in the lyrics of Bon Jovi's Crush album. The songs in the Crush album contain complex lyrics filled with idiomatic expressions. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. To analyze the idioms, M.A.K. Halliday’s theory from his book An Introduction to Functional Grammar is used. Halliday identifies five types of idioms: Literal Idiom, Non-Literal Idiom, Proverbial Idiom, Regional Idiom, and Slang Idiom. First, the idioms in the song lyrics were identified, and then their meanings were analyzed using Leech’s theory of meaning. The theory includes seven types of meaning: conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, collocative meaning, and thematic meaning. The results of the study show that the most frequently found idiom type in the album’s lyrics is the Non-Literal Idiom, with 35 examples. This is followed by the Proverbial Idiom with 14 examples, while the least frequent type is the Regional Idiom with 6 examples. In terms of meaning, the most dominant type is the affective meaning with 36 examples. The next most dominant type is the connotative meaning with 26 examples. The least frequent types of meaning are the reflected meaning and thematic meaning, with 3 examples each. Keywords: Bon Jovi, Idioms, Lyrics, Meaning
