Abstract
The writer discovered that speaking is one of the most difficult skills that students face in English. Many students still find it difficult to speak English because they face several obstacles, including a lack of vocabulary and an inability to understand how to put words together in a sentence or paragraph, a lack of confidence when speaking English, an inability to properly pronounce the word, and a lack of enthusiasm in learning English. Meanwhile, the writer discovers that a role-playing model is a model meant to get students to speak. Because they would take on the role of a character and communicate with their friend through conversations. Therefore, students can undertake role playing more easily by using a short story, such as a fairy tale. Because the story is straightforward and the word length is not excessive. As a result, the writer conducted this study to the eight grade students at SMP PGII 1 Bandung to implement the role playing model and to determine their speaking ability and to find out their respon toward learning by using a role-playing model to improve their speaking ability. In this study, the writer employed a descriptive qualitatve as the method and collected data through observation, tests and interviews. This study's population consisted of 8th grade students from SMP PGII 1 Bandung, with a sample size of 26 students from class 8D. As a result, the writer employed purposive sampling with some criteria to select the sample. According to the study's findings, the procedure of the implementation of the role playing model based on the lesson planning consists of opening, main activities including pretest and posttest and closing. Therefore, learning by employing a roleplaying model improved the speaking skills of 8th grade students by 33%, with a pretest score of 57,5 and a posttest score of 76,7. All of the students agreed that learning through role playing model is enjoyable and can help them practice English more effortlessly. As a result, learning through role playing model from an English fairy tale can increase students' speaking skills as well as their motivation in studying English.
