Abstract

The title of this paper is “A History of the Usage of Racial Slurs towards African-American Community in ‘12 Years A Slave’ Movie”. This paper focuses on the identification, meaning and history of racial slurs that happens in the “12 Years A Slave” movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method. After watching the movie and reading the script, the slurs were identified and analyzed. The result showed that as many as 46 slurs found in the movie. “Nigger” and its modification (negro, raw nigger, negress) are the most dominant slurs used in the “12 Years A Slave” movie, followed by “black” and its modification (black face, thick�lipped black). The slurs define the color of a person's skin. The words nigger and black become the words that categorized African-American slaves as laborers as well as their social identity. The word nigger has become an aspect of every American culture, from literature to politics. The history of racial slurs happened towards African-American community in “12 Years A Slave” is that the word nigger became established as a derogatory name, this word was used as a label against them and described them as despicable, evil, stupid people.
