Abstract

This study aims to describe the comparative study between the novel and the movie The Dark Maidens by Akiyoshi Rikako and Saiji Yakumo. The comparison will be focused on the intrinsic elements. In addition, it also analyzes the problems that will occur due to ecranisation. The research is a descriptive qualitative study. The subject of this research is both the novel and movie The Dark Maidens written by Akiyoshi Rikako and directed by Saiji Yakumo. This research focused on comparing (1) the intrinsic elements using the ecranisation table. Then, (2) the problem that occurs due to ecranisation. The procedures of data collection were reading and watching both The Dark Maidens novel and movie, the writer gathers and present the data and categorize it. Then the writer will create a table to process the data. After the analysis, the writer will find the differences caused by ecranisation and will begin to present the data analysis results and arrange them based on the intrinsic elements. If the problem that caused by the ecranisation is found in the table, the writer will analyze the problem and will present the effect that happens in the story. The results of the study show that ecranisation consists of three processes, namely reduction, addition, and modification. The effect of ecranisation often changed the intrinsic elements; this includes plot changes, characters additions, or reductions. The process of ecranisation in the adaptation of The Dark Maidens leaves minor changes, the ecranisation made by the moviemaker mostly alters the characters, rather than completely removing or adding characters or scenes. The ecranisation made by the moviemaker in The Dark Maidens is 7, counted from the most visible changes made by the moviemaker.
