Abstract

This research paper is entitled, An Analysis of Intrinsic Elements as Seen in Meruntih Berang Ivanna Van Dijk Novel. The objective of the research is to find out the intrinsic elements built in the novel. The writer, in addition, used the qualitative research method and applied documentation type of analysis, which involves analyzing content from written documents to make certain deductions based on the study basis. The primary source is from a novel by Risa Saraswati, Meruntih Berang Ivanna Van Dijk (2018). The result of data analysis indicated the plot's structure that uses a complex progressive plot. The writer employs two grand theories, Gustav Freytag, to reveal the story's plot, and M.H Abrams, to reveal the characters and characterization. There are six fundamental components of the plot that the writer found; exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The story revolves around Ivanna, whose family confirms the Inlander, which represents the opposite of the standards of colonization, with Dimas Van Dijk, Elizabeth Brouwer, and Colonel Matsuya as the epicenter of the built-up story. In addition, the story took place in the Dutch East Indies, in the city called Buitenzorg, and the historical time that occurred in the book is the Dutch East Indies and Japanese Occupation.
