Abstract

This paper entitled “An Analysis of Figurative Language and Its Translation Method in Yusuf Ali’s English Translation of Surah Al Mulk and Al Insan”. This study focus on finding figurative language and its translation method in the translation of Al Mulk and Al Insan by Yusuf Ali. His work is not only provide translation but also his commentary about the translation. This study aims to give consideration for readers in using Yusuf Ali’s translation. The researcher uses the theory of Newmark for translation method and ten chosen figurative language from Waridah and Keraf. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative method, while the technique of collecting data is documentation study. The data is analyzed by close reading technique and comparing to the theory used. From the analysis, the researcher concludes that there are some figurative language used such as metaphor and allegory. Besides that, Yusuf Ali is not only use one translation method but also more. He translated the Holy Qur’an both literally and contextually. Therefore, Yusuf Ali’s translation is worth to use as reference both for academic purposes and for understanding the meaning of the Holy Qur’an.
