Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Speech Act on Columbus’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s StoneFilm”. It attempts to analyze speech actswith focus on Illocutionary actsperformed bythe main character’s utterances thatappearedthroughout the conversationor dialoguesofthe film. There are twopurposes on this research. The firstoneis to foundout speech acts’ functionsthat performed by the main character named Harry James Potter. The second one is to find out the kind of characterpresented bythe main characterbased onthemost performedfunction that appeared on the main character’sutterances. Speech Act itself isan action which performed through autterance, Austin(1962)divideditinto three major kinds; they are Locutionary act, Illocutionary act and Perlocutionary act.Theillocutionary actbecame the focus onthis researchsincethespeech acts’functionsare the part of illocutionary act. The researcher usedtheoryof speech acts’ functions (classifications)by Searle(on Yule 1996)in analyzed the data.The second purpose is to found out the kind of character.Dynamic and Static’s kindof characterbecamethe main focuson this research.To find the result, the writer usedthe theory byRobert (2002).In order to answer the purposes of this research, the writer useda descriptive qualitative approach. The writer found out thatout of five speech act functions, four kinds were performed by the main character. The kinds of illocutionary act that performed by the main character are;Representatives(Statement of Fact, Assertion, Conclusion,Description), Expressives(Statement of Pleasure, Pain, Like, Dislike, Joy and Sorrow),Directives (Command, Request, Suggestion)and Commissives(Threats and Refusal). A kindof speechactfunction that is notperformedby the main characterwas Declaration.Besides, the result of the research shows that the kind of character presented bythe main character was a dynamiccharacter whoexperiencesseveral changes through the story.Moreover, this research generated an understanding of the characteristic presented bythe main characterbased on the most performed dynamic’s table analysis, it shownthat the main character has a potency to become an assertive character who hasfaithon his own selfand keep holding on what he believes.Therefore, by usingspeech acts theory proved that thekind of character andcharacteristic of the characters on a filmcan be revealed.
