Abstract

This paper entitled “Idiomatic Expression in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid “Dog days” and Buku Harian si Bocah Tengil “Hari-Hari Sial” An idiom is a special feature of language that has a specific form or style presents only in a language. Even, in translating idiomatic expressions, we cannot translate them literally (word by word). This is caused of many idiomatic expressions which cannot be understood grammatically. At any rate, idiomatic expressions are very important for the English language learners either EFL (English as Foreign Language) or ESL (English as Second Language). In this research, there are two research problems: 1) What types of idioms are mostly found in comic novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Dog Days) by Jeff Kinney’s and Diary si Bocah Tengil (Hari-Hari Sial) by Ferry Halim? And 2) What strategies are mostly applied by the translator in translating the idioms into Indonesian language? So that, the objectives of this research are: 1) To find out the types of idiomatic expressions that are mostly used in comic novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Dog Days) by Jeff Kinney and 2) To find out the strategies which are mostly applied by the translators in translating the idioms based on the strategies proposed by Baker (1992) of idiomatic expressions found in comic novel entitled Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Dog Days) by Jeff Kinney. This research method used library research by applying it content analysis. The data of this research is in the form of utterances and sentences that contained idiomatic expression. In addition, its data source is taken from Jeff Kinney entitled Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Dog Days) and its Indonesian version. The result of finding analysis, the researcher found out 53 idiomatic expressions. The data were then analyzed by using the types of idioms proposed by Lim (2004). And then, the researcher investigated which strategies were used by the translator in translating idioms purposed by Baker (1992). The results showed that phrasal verbs are the most frequent type of idioms found in the novel with the percentages 51% of the whole data. The last analysis which has done by the researcher is the strategy used by the translator, the study showed that translation by paraphrase is the most frequent strategy used by the translator in translating idioms with the percentages 78% of the whole data.
