Abstract

Grasping how identity is constructed in literary works presents an increasing challenge, particularly when it involves social and environmental dimensions. This study is aimed at revealing the identity construction of Mary Lennox, the main character in The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, through the lens of Judith Butler's theory of performativity and Greg Garrard’s ecocritical concept of dwelling. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with close reading technique to analyze selected passages from the novel. The data were classified into three major themes: Mary’s initial identity, her relationship with the natural environment, and the intertwining of performativity and dwelling in shaping her identity. The findings reveal three key points. First, Mary's initial identity is affected by her colonial upbringing, resulting in physically ill, emotionally cold, disagreeable, selfish, and spoiled. Second, Mary’s dwelling process in the garden gradually deconstruct her identity—physically, emotionally, and socially. Last, Mary’s identity is constructed through the intertwined processes of performativity and dwelling. This intertwining occurs because Mary’s repeated performances are also deeply influenced by her interaction with the nature. To conclude, the secret garden remains a crucial setting where Mary forges emotional connection and belonging, allowing her to deconstruct her identity. Therefore, future studies are encouraged to further explore how place and social contexts influence character construction of identity across different literary works.
