Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the types of idioms and their meanings found in the lyrics of five Kendrick Lamar songs: Like That, Euphoria, 6:16 in LA, Meet The Grahams, and Not Like Us. Kendrick Lamar is a well-known American rapper, songwriter, and producer. He is especially known for his strong lyric-writing skills, including his creative use of idioms. In 2024, Lamar released several songs that seemed to be part of a musical feud with fellow rapper Drake. These songs include complex lyrics filled with idiomatic expressions. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. To analyze the idioms, it follows F.R. Palmer’s theory from his book Semantics: A New Outline. Palmer identifies three types of idioms: phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs, and partial idioms. First, the idioms in the song lyrics were identified, then their meanings were analyzed using Leech’s theory of meaning. Leech’s theory includes seven types of meaning: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflected, collocative, and thematic meanings. The study found that the most common type of idiom in the lyrics was the partial idiom, with 25 examples. This was followed by phrasal verbs with 17 examples, and the least common was prepositional verbs, found only 4 times. As for meaning, the most common were connotative and conceptual meanings, each with 15 examples, followed by affective meaning with 11 examples. Keywords: Idioms, Lyrics, Meaning, Kendrick Lamar.
