Abstract

This study examines the vowels and semi-vowels in Received Pronunciation and the mouth position, which are the most influential characteristics of accent variations. The object used is a song entitled I Love You, Will You Marry Me by Yungblud. The research employs the theory of accent by J.C. Wells, particularly concerning British accents. Additionally, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart is used to analyze the mouth positions of vowels and semi-vowels. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected by transcribing the lyrics of the song I Love You, Will You Marry Me and categorizing the use of vowels and semi-vowels. The results presented 243 vowels categorized into four parts: short, long, diphthongs, and triphthongs and 16 semi-vowels. Moreover, based on the IPA chart, the mouth position of vowels is categorized into front, central, back, open, close, and rounded. Unlike vowels, semi-vowels act as consonants and have different mouth positions. Short vowel sounds are frequently found in this song because I Love You, Will You Marry Me has a fast tempo. Keywords: Accent, Received Pronunciation, Vowel, Semi-vowels
