Abstract

The character in the film have an important role in the continuity of a story, as do the side characters. The existence of side characters on not only a support for the main character but to deepen the conflict, emotions, and broaden the point of view. This research is entitled “An Analysis of Brooks Hatlen’s characterization on Darabont’s the Shawshank Redemption (1994)”. The objective of this study is the find out the support character named Brooks Hatlen. The analysis of the study was done based on Characterization theory by Minderop (2013). This study uses descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The writer concludes that the support character, Brooks Hatlen have alienation. It is mean that he scared about outside after so long in the prison. In the film he is depicted as an old prisoner who is unable to adapt to the cruel world. Ending himself by hanging himself was the only choice he could do. Keywords: Support Character, Characterization, Film
