Abstract

This research tells about tragedy within a novel entitled A farewell to Arms. The novel was written by Ernest Hemingway. The writer chooses the novel because he feels interested in how the author delivered the story. The writer thinks that the main character was described much more alive and the story is really interesting. The writer decides to conduct this research to find how the main faced the event which made the story ended up tragically. The writer uses Aristotles’ concept about tragedy to answer the problem. The concept is more refered to drama. Furthermore the writer uses the two primary of the elements, character and plot. Qualitative method is used to described the character and the plot within the novel. In doing the research the writer also makes explanation about point of view and setting to make the research easier. Purpose of this research is to show the causality that makes the story ended up tragically. If the writer finds another things on this research, it will be reported on chapter 4 and 5.
