Abstract
English is an international language that almost all of people around the world use it, whether it is for business, social, economy, education or any other utilizing. It is the most popular language in the universe. Therefore, in this era of globalization, we need to learn this language so we would not be left behind in these days. Speaking is one of the four language skills that must be mastered by the students in learning English. However, speaking in a foreign language is not very easy, such as speaking English. Many students have the difficulties when speaking, such as lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and fluency. There are so many ways to improve students’ speaking ability. In teaching and learning, there are many methods, techniques or approaches that can be used by the teacher. In this paper the writer took the title “The Implementation of Short Plays as Teaching Technique in Improving Students’ Speaking Skills (A Study towards Tenth Grade of Senior High School 15 Bandung Academic Year 2014-2015).” In this research, the writer tries to apply the short plays technique in teaching speaking. To evaluated the effectiveness of this technique the writer uses two cycles, cycle 1 and cycle 2. Cycle 1 is one of activity before the teacher gives the material to the students. Cycle 2 is one of activity after the teacher gives the material to the students using short plays/role-playing. The results of cycle 1 and cycle 1 students showed that there was an increase in the students’ speaking ability after the treatment. It can be seen from the overall score of 18 students from the cycle 1 was 70 and the average score of 3.8, and an overall score of 18 students from cycle 2 was 116 and the average score of 6.4. It means that the technique short plays/role-playing is good and effective to improve students’ speaking ability.
