Abstract

This research paper, entitled " An Analysis of Itje Garnida’s Double Role as a Wife and Her Motive to Become a Good Mother in Mulyas’s Sabtu Bersama Bapak ", aims to analyze the portrayal and development of the main female character, Itje Garnida, focusing on her motives to become a good mother figure after her husband's death. Departing from a psychological-maternal approach, this study employs Gerrard Genette’s Theory of Narratology (1980) as its grand theory. Genette argues that narrative discourse can be analyzed through five core elements: Order, Duration, Frequency, Mood, and Voice. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research conducts a textual analysis of the novel Sabtu Bersama Bapak as the primary data source. The analysis focuses on how the narrative elements—specifically plot development, character interactions, setting, and point of view—construct Itje Garnida's character and reveal her underlying motives. The data collection involved close reading and note-taking, followed by categorization based on Genette’s framework. The findings indicate that Itje's character is meticulously built through key plot events that challenge and shape her resilience, such as her husband's death and her journey as a single parent. Her motives are not explicitly stated but are revealed indirectly through her dialogues, actions, and reactions to conflicts, which are central to the story's progression. The setting of a family grappling with loss reinforces her role as the emotional and moral anchor. In conclusion, through the lens of Narratology, this study reveals that Adhitya Mulya's Sabtu Bersama Bapak crafts Itje Garnida's character and motives not as a standalone psychological profile, but as an integral and dynamic component of the story's structure, highlighting how narrative techniques are pivotal in conveying the depth of a mother's love and determination. Keywords: Narrative Analysis, Characterization, Plot, Mother Figure, Sabtu Bersama Bapak, Gerrard Genette.
