Abstract
This research analyzes the narrative structure of the myth of Nyi Puhaci in Tentang Wawacan Sulanjana Majalengka and compares it with the figure of Inari Okami in Japanese mythology. The research aims to examine how the narrative of Nyi Puhaci is organized within the text and to identify similarities and differences in the representation of agrarian deities across different cultural traditions. The study employs a qualitative approach through close reading of the narrative text. The analysis is based on the narratological framework introduced by Gérard Genette, which focuses on several narrative elements, including temporal order, narrative duration, narrative frequency, focalization, and narrative voice. The results show that the narrative of Nyi Puhaci presents a structured narrative pattern through various narrative techniques. Flashback is used to present earlier events in the narrative order, while the pacing of the story is shaped by the use of both summary and scene. In terms of frequency, the narrative mainly applies singulative narration, where events that occur once in the story are narrated once in the discourse. The narrative perspective is presented through zero focalization, and the narrator is positioned as an extradiegetic-heterodiegetic voice. In addition, the comparison with Inari Ōkami indicates that although both figures are connected to agrarian beliefs and fertility symbolism, their narrative representations differ according to their respective cultural contexts. This study demonstrates that narratological analysis can provide a deeper understanding of how mythological narratives are structured within traditional texts.
