Abstract
This study examines Zadie Smith's novel The Fraud (2023), focusing on how the character Eliza Touchet becomes a symbol of resistance against the strict gender norms of the Victorian era. In the midst of a patriarchal social structure that limits women's roles to the domestic space, Eliza's character presents the tension between the gender constructs imposed by society and her expression of individual identity. This study aims to (1) examine how the character of Eliza Touchet reflects the tension between social gender constructs and the individual struggle for selfexpression in Victorian society, and (2) apply Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity to explain how Eliza Touchet's resistance challenges patriarchal norms. The research method used is qualitative with a text study approach. The analysis is framed by Susan S. Lanser's feminist narratology and Judith Butler's Gender Performativity Theory to interpret Eliza's acts of resistance. The primary data for this research are narrative and dialogue excerpts from the novel The Fraud, while the secondary data include academic journals and books relevant to gender theory and Victorian literature. The character of Eliza Touchet represents resistance to Victorian gender norms through intelligent and layered gender performativity. She proves that identity can be a brilliant “deception,” a performance that both conceals and reveals subversive truths, and shows that resistance can be found in the way a person lives their daily life. Keywords: Gender Performativity, Resistance, Victorian Era
