Abstract
This study investigates the use of euphemisms in reporting the Ferdy Sambo Case on TheJakartaPost.com, focusing on how language functions as a tool to mitigate social sensitivities within mass media discourse. By analyzing linguistic strategies such as circumlocution, litotes, and generalfor-specific substitutions, the research shows how these euphemistic techniques soften the portrayal of sensitive events to create a more neutral and diplomatic narrative. These deliberate linguistic choices frame the news in ways that respect legal and social norms while maintaining audience engagement. Euphemisms perform important social and communicative roles beyond simple linguistic decoration; they help manage public perception, moderate emotional reactions, and uphold journalistic ethics by avoiding direct confrontation or criticism. For example, phrases like “the legal process must be followed” and “issues in the handling of the case” demonstrate how indirect language conveys complex realities while preserving institutional respect and minimizing controversy. This approach emphasizes the media’s balancing act between disseminating information and practicing social diplomacy. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the nuanced function of euphemistic language in sensitive news reporting in the Indonesian media context, highlighting euphemisms as key mediators of truth and public sentiment that reflect the complex relationship between language, society, and journalism. Future research is recommended to conduct comparative studies across various media platforms and cultural contexts to further enrich the understanding of euphemistic communication in contemporary journalism.
