Abstract
The structure of news headlines frequently involves the use of loanwords, particularly from English, which raises questions regarding how these words are morphologically adapted into Indonesian. The purpose of this research is to identify the morphological processes applied to English loanwords and analyze their use in the news headlines of CNBC Indonesia’s lifestyle channel, as well as to examine whether these processes affect the clarity and communicative value of the headlines. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method consisting of three stages: planning, implementation, and reporting. The data were collected over a one-week period, from May 22 to May 28, 2023, resulting in 25 headlines containing English loanwords. The analysis was conducted using Bauer’s (2003) theory of morphology to classify the loanwords into derivation, inflection, and borrowing without morphological processes. The findings show that derivation is the most dominant process, with 12 loanwords appearing in 11 headlines, while 17 loanwords were identified as direct borrowings without morphological change. No inflectional processes were found, which reflects the tendency of headline writing to employ base forms for clarity and brevity. These results are valid within the context of the selected data and indicate that morphological adaptation, particularly derivation, plays a significant role in integrating English loanwords into Indonesian. In conclusion, this study highlights how mass media language reflects ongoing linguistic development influenced by globalization. Keywords: CNBC Indonesia, English Loanwords, Morphological process, News Headlines.
