Abstract

This study analyzes grammatical errors in confirmation letters written by the Front Office staff of Mercure Bandung Nexa Supratman Hotel. The research aims to identify the types of errors and determine the most frequently occurring ones. The data were collected from six confirmation letters and analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method, with the framework of Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s (1982) Surface Strategy Taxonomy, which classifies errors into four categories: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The findings show that a total of 51 grammatical errors were identified. Misformation was the most frequent error type with 29 occurrences, involving the use of incorrect grammatical forms and word choices such as “as per mentioned,” “Number of Room,” and “deposited.” Addition errors occurred 12 times, mostly caused by redundancy in politeness markers such as “Kindly please” and incorrect combinations like “12Noon.” Misordering errors were found 6 times, mainly in incorrect number formatting such as “IDR6860,000,- .” Omission was the least frequent error type with 4 occurrences, primarily due to missing spaces in currency notation (e.g., “IDR780.000”) and after the equal sign (“=IDR”). These results indicate that misformation is the most dominant error type, while omission is the least common. The study highlights the importance of grammatical accuracy in confirmation letters as they reflect the professionalism and service quality of the hotel, and it provides recommendations for improving written communication in the hospitality industry.
