Abstract
The aim of this research is to identify the types of figurative language and their meanings in the lyrics of the album "What Do You Really Know?" by Reality Club. Reality Club is an indie rock band from Jakarta, Indonesia. Their lyrics stand out because they use beautiful words, strong images, and interesting ideas. They often write poetic lyrics full of figurative language. Their album "What Do You Really Know?" shows a darker side of the band, different from the happier style of their earlier songs. It talks about growing up, life experiences, and both the good and bad parts of life. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The analysis of figurative language is conducted using Kennedy's types of figurative language theory. There are 8 types of figurative language according to Kennedy namely, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, irony, allusion, metonymy, and symbol. First, the types of figurative language present in the lyrics are analyzed, followed by an interpretation of their meanings. The lyrics in the album contain metaphors, personifications, ironies, and hyperboles. However, similes, allusions, metonymy, and symbols were not found. The results reveal that the use of figurative language primarily focuses on the emotional condition of the speaker in the lyrics, with several themes also revolving around relationships or love. The findings shows that the album primarily focuses on the theme of growing up, and the light and dark aspects of life, focusing on feelings of loss, anger, and frustration. Keywords: Figurative Language, Lyrics, Meaning, Reality Club.
