Abstract

This research, entitled “An Analysis of Active Sentences in News Leads on Kompas.com’s Political Channel,” aims to analyze the types of news leads and the structure of active sentences used in political news articles published on Kompas.com during the October 2024 period. The study is motivated by the crucial role of news leads in digital journalism, as they are the key to capturing readers' attention and delivering essential information effectively. This research employs a qualitative method with a content analysis approach. The data were collected from 100 political news leads featured on Kompas.com and analyzed based on Chip Scanlan’s (2000) classification of news leads and Huddleston and Pullum’s (2002) theory of active sentence structure. The findings reveal that the most frequently used lead types are “who leads” and “what leads.” This indicates that Kompas.com prioritizes significant public figures and current political issues as focal points in their news delivery. From a syntactic perspective, monotransitive active sentences dominate the construction of the leads, where the subject performs a direct action toward an object. Other sentence types, including ditransitive, complex transitive, intransitive, and copular constructions, were also found but appeared less frequently. The use of active sentences contributes to enhanced clarity and effectiveness in conveying political information to the audience. In conclusion, the selection of news lead types and the application of active sentence structures in Kompas.com’s political reporting reflect adherence to professional journalistic principles that emphasize accuracy, readability, and audience engagement. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to the fields of linguistics and journalism and serve as a practical reference for writing clear and impactful digital news content.
