Abstract
The title of this research is “The Implementation of Game-based Learning in Teaching Descriptive Text to Enhance Students’ Speaking Skill”. The purpose of this research is to find out 1) the implementation of the GBL method in teaching descriptive text, 2) the teaching equipment of the implementation of the GBL method, 3) the result of the implementation of the GBL method, and 4) students’ responses to the implementation of the GBL method. The research was carried out by the writer on the sample of 41 seventh graders from SMP Pasundan 3 Bandung during the academic year of 2024–2025. This research used a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis to analyze the data. The data were collected by observation sheet, pre-test and post-test, and interview. Based on the results of the data analysis, it was found that from 41 students, 27 have their score enhanced, with 2 students scored above the KKM, 12 students’ post-test scores were the same as their pre-test scores, and 2 students’ post-test scores were lower than their pre-test scores. The summed-up score of all the students for the pre-test was 1002, and for the post-test it was 1208, it means the average score of both tests went from 24 to 29. The results show that after the implementation of the GBL method, there was a slight enhancement in students’ speaking skill, although the score was still below the criteria, which was 70. All of the students’ responses in the interview indicated that they found learning English using games more enjoyable and interesting, it made them less nervous about learning the language.
