Abstract

This study explores the theme of depression in Bring Me the Horizon’s song lyrics from "That’s the Spirit" (2015) through figurative language analysis. It emphasizes the importance of appreciating literature, especially through figurative language, which enhances textual beauty and deepens connections with diverse contexts, notably in song lyrics. Figurative language is viewed as a powerful tool that adds layers of meaning beyond mere textual representation. It can become the literary works or even a paper that can be more dramatic, beautiful and make a variative emotions can be meaningful for the reader to feel what the writer mean. The lyrical of the song can be having some of the figurative language to make the lyric bore dramatic or even more beautiful. Grounded in Kennedy’s theoretical framework (1983), the research aims to enhance critical thinking and creativity in song lyrics. Methodologically, it employs a qualitative descriptive approach, systematically documenting data through stages of reading, documentation, analysis, and synthesis. This approach ensures a comprehensive exploration of figurative language in selected songs, identifying and examining 32 instances to provide insights into its expressive potential in musical compositions, thereby advancing scholarly understanding at the intersection of figurative language meaning and music lyric. The results showed that the writer utilized a total of 32 figurative language instances. Specifically, the data included 29 metaphors, 2 similes, and 1 personification. These literary devices offer readers a fresh perspective through alternative interpretations and symbolic representations of the songs.
