Abstract

This research is entitled “A Semantical Analysis on JVKE’s Song Lyrics: This Is What____Feels Like (Vol. 1-4) Album”. This research aims to analyze the types of connotative meaning and the interpretation of connotative meaning of the lyrics, from JVKE selected song on “This Is What ____ Feels Like (Vol. 1-4)”. The reason of choosing the song lyrics as the data is because sometimes, the songwriter uses some words and phrases that have connotative meaning. The message in a song can be seen through the lyrics, therefore the meaning of a song must be interpreted so the message can be conveyed properly. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. This research used the semantics theory from Geoffrey Leech (1981) and connotation theory from Riebs & Reeves (2005) to answer the research problem. Based on the analysis of data, the total number of songs analyzed consists of six songs. From the six songs that have been analyzed, there are 20 data categorized containing the connotative meaning. According to Riebs & Reeves (2005), connotative meaning is divided into three, namely positive connotation, negative connotation, and neutral connotation. The author found ten positive connotation and ten negative connotation in the lyrics of JVKE's songs that have been analyzed. The songs contained in this album come from the singer’s personal experience in his relationship.
