Abstract

The research entitled “An Analysis of Verne’s : Around the World in Eighty Days” was presented to English Department of Pasundan University to completing the final research indeed. The content are about plot and characterization. Plot and characters analyzed in order to understand more about the literary work. The novel that chosen in this research is Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. The writer chosed this novel because of the unique story and genre. The story tells about a man name Phileas Fogg, he is a gentleman from London. He never travels around the world. One day, at The Reform Club, one of the finest club house in England, he accepted a bet. With his confidence, prediction and spirit he accepted the challenge and travel around the world. This research examines about intrinsic elements focusing about the plot and characterization in Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days. This research is focused on analyzing how is the stages of plot in the novel and how is the author conveyed the characterization, especially the main characters of the novel through narratives and dialogue and will be focuses on important data. The aim of this research is to find out how is the plot and characterization of the novel “Around the World in Eighty Days” by Jules Verne. The writer conducts this research by using qualitative descriptive method and by using the grand theory by Koesmobroto. The result of this research explains some stages of plot and characterization in the novel, those are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement. The writer choose this novel because the story in the novel is about traveling, even though the writer never traveled around the world, this book gives that experience. After doing this research, the writer founds some result. The plot in this story is simple and easy to understand. The stages of plot in this story can help the reader understand better as the events that connected to each other going progressively. The characters in this novel that have important role are Mr.Phileas Fogg and Passpartout. Mr.Fogg described as a gentleman from London who live like a machine. He lives mathematically, he always pay attention to his daily habit and repeat it systematically. The journey around the world revealed another side of him. He met the love of his life. Auoda a woman that he saved from a ceremony that almost killed her in India. The second main character is Passepartout, a parisian who travelled around the world to find his master. He is a valet who loyal and passionate with his job. He acompany Mr.Fogg through his journey around the world. The journey was not easy and so sudden, but he served his master until the end.
