Abstract

The use of powder metallurgy in the automotive field began with the use of self-lubricated bearings through a sintering process in 1920 to 1930. Currently, the development of powder metallurgy is directed at the manufacture of metallic foam or porous metals. This research will develop Brass Powder (CuZn) which is mixed with graphite which is expected to increase the lubrication effect. Space holders are used to help form porosity in metallic foam, which in this study used corn flour. The alloy powder will be mixed and milled, compacted at a pressure of 100 kgf/cm2 and 110 kgf/cm2, sintered at a maximum temperature of 9000C with initial holding at 2000C for 1 hour and final holding at 9000C for 1 hour. Hardness testing was carried out to determine the strength of the specimen, microstructure test to determine the porosity that was formed. This study concluded that compaction pressure and sintering time had a major effect on the porosity formed Keyword :Powder Metallurgy, Metallic Foam, Space Holder, CuZnC, Corn Starch,Porosity
