Abstract

The title of this research is “A Descriptive Analysis of the Vowel Sounds on the Holy Quran: Surah Al-Fātihah, Al-Ikhlāsh, Al-Falaq, and An-Nās”. It is the phonetical and phonological analysis about Arabic vowel sounds on the Holy Quran such as Surah Al-Fātihah, Al-Ikhlāsh, Al-Falaq, and An�Nās. Then find the similarities of the vowel sounds both in Arabic and English base on the analysis. Using International Phonetic Alphabet as a consistent way of representing the sounds of language in written form. This research aims to give new knowledge and insight about kind of Arabic vowel sounds and the similarity with English vowel sounds. Because of true or false pronunciation and long or short the vowels spoken can affect the meaning of the words in verbal communication. Especially for Muslim when reading Quran and dhikr. This research is a qualitative study which used phonetics & phonology theory by Chaer (2012), Odden (2005), and Katamba (1996). In additional, using the theories by Vicente (2020) and Roach (1998) for English Vowel Sounds and Hussain (2009) and Lamtabbet (2009) for Arabic Vowel Sounds. Document analysis is used for collecting the data, then the data is discussed and interpreted in the descriptive form by following the relevant theories. The research has presented the short vowels, long vowels, and diphthong on Surah Al-Fātihah, Al-Ikhlāsh, Al-Falaq, and An-Nās. Therefore, it will provide benefits for readers and the next researchers also as an overview to continue other research ahead in another object or Surah.
