Abstract

The title of this research paper is ―The Illocutionary Acts in Harry and Meghan‘s Interview with Oprah Winfrey on CBS Morning (2021) Transcript. This study aims to find out the types of illocutionary acts contained in one of the most shocking interviews in the world, namely an interview with the former member of royal family, Harry and Meghan Markle interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, with a total viewership of 4.79 million viewers when it first aired. The type of illocutionary acts will be thoroughly pared down by John R. Seirle's theory of speech acts.This research uses a qualitative research design and descriptive qualitative research method, where the results of the study are in the form of an overview of what is said by the three main subjects, namely Harry, Meghan, and Oprah. In addition, data collection techniques were carried out by analyzing interview videos along with the transcripts, and strengthened by literature studies. Based on the results of the study, five types of illocutionary acts were found in an interview with Harry and Meghan, which interviewed by Oprah. There are 319 data from 644 sentences indicated as illocutionary acts. The five types are spoken by Harry, Meghan, and Oprah, among others; assertives 63%, directives 27%, commissives 0.6%, expressives 7.3%, and declarations 0.3%. From the data, the type of assertives leads in the first order. Meanwhile, for the direct and indirect speech acts functions, as an advanced stage after finding the type of illocutionary acts, of the 319 data, 295 data are direct speech acts functions, and 24 data are indirect speech acts functions. As a result, Harry and Meghan interview with Oprah on CBS Morning transcript were stated to be more dominant in having illocutionary acts of assertives type and direct speech acts functions.
