Abstract

The writer reflected on the problems faced by students in learning English which are because of their lack of vocabulary mastery and the way they acquire and memorize the English vocabulary that mostly from conventional media like book or dictionary which are less attractive to the students. On the other hand, song is considered to be used as an alternative teaching media that is fun and can improve students' English ability. Hence, the writer conducted this study to find out the procedure of implementing songs as a teaching media in teaching Simple Song for the 10th grade students at SMAN 1 Ciawigebang, the results of the implementation of songs as a teaching media on students' vocabulary mastery, and students' responses toward the use of English songs as a teaching media to improve their vocabulary mastery. The writer used descriptive qualitative as the method for this study and used observation, tests, and interviews to obtain data. The population in this study was the 10th grade students of SMAN 1 Ciawigebang, and the sample used was class 10 IPS-3, It was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Based on the findings of the study, the procedure of implementation of songs as a teaching media is divided into three stages, i.e., opening, main activity which is divided into pre-listening while-listening and post-listening section, and closing. Students' vocabulary mastery also increased up to 184%, in which the pre-test result is 25.5 and the post-test result is 72.5. The students also had positive responses to the implementation of the song as a teaching media, although there were 4 students who preferred book or dictionary as the teaching media. Thus, it can be concluded that songs can be used as an alternative teaching media that is enjoyable and able to improve students' vocabulary mastery.
