Abstract

The research entitled “An Analysis of Racial Discrimination in Ellison’s Invisible Man” was written to fulfil the requirement for taking the bachelor degree of English Department in Pasundan University. The content written in this research paper is about the racial discrimination in Ellison’s Invisible Man. The reason why the writer chooses Ellison’s Invisible Man to be analyze is because the novel has crucial role in perceiving the life of people of Colors which the issue of racial discrimination was never come to an end up to this day. The writer decides to analyze the racial discrimination compatible with the psychological effects caused by it because the writer believes that both people who spread hatred and people who receive the hatred, more or less, get affected by it. Although, in this paper the writer focuses only on the people who receive the hatred who portrayed as the main character in Ellison’s Invisible Man. Invisible Man is a novel written by Ralph Ellison in order to inform the life of Black community and superiority of White community in the twentieth century. Within this research, the writer tries to analyze the main character’s behaviors as signs and interprets the signs as the psychological symptoms. The writer then looks for the psychological disorder that compatible with the symptoms that the main character showed in his behaviors in the novel. This research paper was written to analyze the effect of racial discrimination to the main character’s psychological condition in Ellison’s Invisible Man using semiotic approach as the tool to interpret the signs that the main character showed in his behaviors.
