Abstract

This research studies the issue of capitalism in the movie The Lorax directed by Chris Renaud. The purpose of this study is to identify the issues of capitalism that are found and described in The Lorax movie. Because the focus of this research is the issue of capitalism, the author uses a sociological approach to see the connection between literature and capitalism. Because the data in Dr. Seuss' The Lorax is presented in the form of descriptive and pictures, the qualitative method is used in this study. The author can more easily explain in the form of descriptive text by using qualitative methods. The author gathers information in a variety of ways, including by studying the screenplay for Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. The writer then analyses the pictures or footage and dialogues related to the issue, as this research is primarily focused on movies. Finally, the writer came to a conclusion after categorizing the data in relation to the capitalism issue in Dr. Seuss' The Lorax movie. In this study, the author finds that the movie "The Lorax" depicts the social conditions that exist which is the issue of capitalism. The residents' social conditions are based on the company's advertisements, which encourage them to be hedonists. Hedonist behavior makes it a capitalist environment. Dr. Seuss not only conveys the issue of capitalism well, but he also wants to remind readers that this issue is harming people right now, which becomes a moral message for the reader. The goal of this research is to inform people about the problems that capitalism causes. Hopefully, this research will provide readers with new information, especially for English and Literature Department students. Keywords: literature, movie, capitalism, sociology of literature
