Abstract
Figurative language has important role in media, such as in novel, poetry or song’s lyrics. The figurative language makes more interesting and more variable in literary work. One of literary work is poetry that refers to song’s lyrics. One of figurative language is metaphorical expression. The songwriter applies metaphors in lyrics to be more beautiful and varieties. The purposeof this research is to analyzeof metaphor on Sasmi’s lyrics in Luminescence album. This research analyzed the types of metaphor and to convey the meaning of metaphor in Anggun’s Luminescence album. Metaphor is a part of figurative language that compares one thing to another. According to Lakoff and Johnson (1980) in the classical view, metaphor can be defined as a figure ofspeech or trope in which a comparison is made between two unlike things that share certain characteristics. The method of this research is using descriptive qualitative. The research questions will be answered in findings and discussions. The concept of metaphorical expressions are analyzed by using George Lakoff and Mark Johnson theory. They are structural metaphor, orientationalmetaphor and ontological metaphor. The result of this research shows that all types of metaphor are found in the data. Metaphors found in Anggun’s Luminescence album, they are 11 structural metaphors, 4 orientational metaphors, 15 ontological metaphors. They are 29 metaphors found in Anggun’s Luminescence album. In Your mind; 2 metaphors, Undress Me; 4 metaphors, Evil and Angel; 3metaphors, Breathe in Water; 5 metaphors, Savior; 1 metaphor, Surrender; 2 metaphors, Captivity; 2 metaphors, Cover; 2 metaphors, Something Sublime; 2 metaphors, Devil in my Mind; 3 metaphors, Painted; 1 metaphor, Human;1 metaphor, and Go; 1 metaphor. The metaphors which are frequently found in Anggun’s Luminescence album is “Ontological Metaphors”. The meaning of metaphors that appeared in Anggun’s Luminescence album refers to social awareness of women’s right and spreading message of women empowerment, the important of being honest and truth to yourself, the journey of explore and discover. Surrender to God, the journey of love; brokenhearted, fall in love or happiness, and the longing of home. The songwriter also uses metaphors to express feelings such as loneliness, regrets, hope, and despair. Moreover, the songwriter uses metaphors to help the listeners to understand better a certain idea by comparing it with something they are familiar with. Figurative language such as metaphors also make the lyrics more beautiful and interesting compared to the use of literal language.Keyword: Metaphor, Lakoff and Johnson, Song’s Lyrics
