Abstract

This research is entitled An Analysis of Oppression in Oliver Twist Novel by Charles Dickens. The researcherchooses Oliver Twist novelas her research media because she feels interestingin the Novel. Dickens was mentioned as a genius writer in the world. Heputsthe character and conflict to his novelsmartly. The focus of her research is about Oppression. Oppression is an act of violence, coercion or threat aimed to intimidate someone. The researcheruses Marxist, Sociology Literature, The Actantial Scheme, and Freytag‟s Pyramid. Furthermore, the researcheruses the Irish Marion Young theory to classify the types of oppression. The relations between Marxist, sociology literature and literary work will find out how the author portraythe oppression in Oliver Twist novel. According to Marxist theory that literary work not only an illusion but also the incident that ever faced by the author in producinga literary work. The researcheruses a descriptive qualitative method to answer the research problem. The result of this paper isthe authordescribeoppression based on the social condition in the revolution of industrial in London. He describes thatthe VictorianAge has a lot of problematics. The problematics are child labor, violence, marginalization, cultural imperialism, powerlessness even prostitution. The reality of oppression in the charactersof Oliver Twist novelcauses by greedy, selfish, jealous, and the fear of poverty.The conclusions of this paper are; the relations between Marxist, Sociology Literature and Literary work in Oliver Twist novelshowed there are the connections between literary work and author‟s ideology. In other word, it is called superstructure and infrastructure in a literary work. Oliver Twist novelwas not solely from the illusion of the author but based on the events faced by the author in VictorianEra. Furthermore, the poverty problem was the main cause experienced by the oppressor. If there are more pressure experienced by a person, it made the emotion will increase too. So that person has opportunity to commit violence. It means, thedesire of human to oppress is because he is too individualistic and wants to be a bourgeois.Keywords: Oppression, Marxist, Oliver Twist novel, Characterization.
